1 - Chocolate Society? What's that all about?
ChocSoc aims to create an atmosphere in which chocolate lovers can unite to relax from the pressures of university life. ChocSoc supports the appreciation of all genres of chocolate. For our full list of aims, see the constitution.
2 - But what exactly do you do?
ChocSoc organises a wide variety of events throughout the year. Past events have included an evening of workshops to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight, with guest speakers from the Day Chocolate Company, Kuapa Kokoo cocoa co-operative in Ghana, Oneworld and People and Planet. We frequently hold chocolate tastings, quizzes, movie nights, chocolate fondues, and games evenings, not to mention our annual trip to Cadbury World! For upcoming events, see what's on?
3 - Sounds good, but I don't actually like chocolate. Can I still come?
No worries, we already have a few crazy members who don't like chocolate. We are not going to force you to eat it, and there are so many cool events going on that you will enjoy the society, even if you don't want to eat the mountains of chocolate that we provide.
4 - Where and when do you meet?
We meet each Tuesday at 8.30. Check our calendar to check but you'll usually find us in Teviot in the Terrace bar which is through the big room which has costa in it!
5 - It is the middle of the year, can I still come along?
Of course, we are always really happy to see new members, and lots of people join mid-way through the year.
6 - How much will it cost me?
A year's membership costs just £6 after fresher's week if you are a matriculated student of the University of Edinburgh. It is £10 for everyone else. If you join in Fresher's week, there may be a reduction.
7 - Is ChocSoc sponsored?
Yes, we have quite a few special deals with local clubs and we are working on obtaining discounts at both thorntons and chocolate soup!
8 - What is the typical ChocSoc member like?
There is no such thing as a typical ChocSoc member, and this is what makes us such a great society. We have members from all years and disciplines, including postgraduate students. We also welcome international students, students from other universities, and past students.
9 - If I join, will I put on weight?
Well, that depends on a lot of things, not just on how much chocolate you eat. We recommend a balanced diet, plenty of exercise and a lot of laughter.
10 - Do you support Fairtrade?
Yes. We have strong relations with the Day Chocolate Company, who produce Fairtrade chocolate, including Dubble and Divine. We organised a very successful event for them during Fairtrade Fortnight 2003, and hope to work with them again in the near future. To read more about this event from the Day Chocolate Company's website, click here
11 - Do you have a newsletter or mailing list?
Yes! Anyone is welcome is join our mailing list (members are added automatically). It typically receives one or two emails per week and you can leave at any time. To sign up, click here Also look for us on Facebook - our group name is 'Proud member of ChocSoc' - to hear about up coming events!
12 - I am diabetic. Is there any point in joining?
Yes, we still run a lot of great events throughout the year. We also support (and can easily get ahold of) diabetic chocolate.
13 - Is it healthy to eat chocolate?
Ongoing research suggests that chocolate is good for your heart, lowering blood pressure. While excesses can obviously be harmful, chocolate in moderation may actually be beneficial to your health!
14 - When is ChocSoc's birthday?
ChocSoc's birthday is the 21st October 2002
